I would recommend and have been recommended the following:

123-reg
TotalWebSolutions
Nominet
UKreg

Sorry I wouldn't recommend 1and1, too many bad reviews...As for GoDaddy they are okay but not the best in my view.

Hi truereddevil

I have been dealing in domains for a number of years.
Firstly you will not be able to get a 10 year deal on any domains these are restricted to: 1 year for a .com and 2 years for .co.uk. After these periods you have to re-register.

I would recommend: Fasthosts or 123 reg for any .co.uk and namecheap for any .com, this is purely based on price for Domain name. If you wanted a .co.uk domain and website gbbo.co.uk are offering free domain reg and website for 2 years, worth a look. I am just in the process of setting one up

If you are looking for any specific names I have some for sale so just pm me and let me know what you are looking for.

really ;)

no issues with .com / .org / etc. and registering for 10 years ;) do it all the time.

there are lots of companies who can register domains for you, key issues to consider (more important ultimately than cost):
- ability to move it if needed - some companies are very restrictive
- ownership of domain - some companies will register them in their name - you may not own the domain.
- hosting, it is often the best approach to consider both together (thought not necessary as you can point the DNS where-ever you want as long as you have control of it), but if you do buy both together make sure that the hosting will offer what you need - a lot of the cheaper options will not give robust commercial hosting (there may be add on costs for databases / ftp / etc., there may be bandwidth limits - your website might therefore vanish mid month)

step carefully...

I personally like GoDaddy for .com domain names. I am not sure why you would think you can't renew them for long term as I know you can get a domain on at least 5 years if you wanted to.

You can always find coupons for them for discounts online.

For .co.uk I use my hosts 34sp a lot of the time.

I am not sure why people are saying about "coming online faster". Sometimes when I buy a new domain it is in my godaddy account and the hosting is online with about 20 minutes.

Hi
My experience is as follows:

FastHosts - Cheaper than 123-reg (only slightly) but their customer service is appalling and their call centre is 'overseas'.

123-reg - okay for domain names, but I use them for hosting my website and emails. Email server goes down at least once a fortnight, thus my service suffers because I cannot respond to customers.

JustHosts - they're good for hosting. I use them to host a client's website. They're cheap (you get it cheaper if you go to the website, then click to close - it comes up with a half price offer). They offer one free domain name for life with hosting (but don't sell individual domains). Not sure what happens to that domain should you cease hosting with them, so I wouldn't choose them for your 'key' domain; just another relevant domain name for SEO purposes.

Hope that helps a bit!

Hi,

I am sure your probrably sorted but would happily quote you for your domains and offer hosting as well - frop me a PM if you fancy a quote.

We never register domains in our own name they are all in your name and if you were to buy 10+ domains would chuck in some free hosting as well.

Domain registration and hosting is a pile it high sell 'em cheap industry and this usually means self service all the way. Great when you have no problem but the acid test comes when you try to contact them and find either nobody mans the phone or worse they have no phone!

I had this problem with 123-reg so moved my hosting to a site with a clearly published phone number that I tested before signing up.

Sometimes when I buy a new domain it is in my godaddy account and the hosting is online with about 20 minutes.

This is dependent on the internet chain between you and your host, it can take up to 3 hours for all the routers between you and your host to be updated with new domain names links, so you could find your website is up and available to you in 20 minutes but the client in the next town may not see it for 3 hours. or vice versa.

It only takes 3 hours for all the DNS servers on the internet to flush their caches, if none of them have looked for your site yet, then you don't have to wait 3 hours for the caches to flush. Any DNS server that takes longer than 3 hours to have it's cache flushed is generally setup improperly, or the TTL on the DNS record is set way to high. And if you immediately point your name to the right server as soon as you buy it, it can even be as short as 5 minutes.

This is outside the control of the hosting company

I would register for 2 years only to start with and renew when and if your business succeeds.
Godaddy are cheap as chips for dot com's and come with free hosting albeit with banner ads otherwise you could just point your domains to your main website and use these as additional file/storage space.

You can only registered .uks for 2 years as it is. .com and .net up to ten years - how long you register for is up to you. If you are sure you'll be using the domain in 10 years get it now for 10 years - prices are going to go up and you'll get some kind of multi year discount so you'll probably save a little bit of money.

Wouldn't bother with .eu personally.

I personally register dot coms and other (gTLDs) with godaddy and register .co.uk with 123 purely based on cost but also as mentioned elsewhere I use different registrars and hosting providers for strategic (SEO) reasons too.
For convenience you could register everything with godaddy but are expensive for .co.uk although to offset that cost their hosting is cheap also and you wouldnt have to bother with domain transfer.

TIP. If you do decide to use godaddy do a google search for
Godaddy promo codes which will save you money at the checkout!

Good luck
