I have about 20 domain names registered with about 5 different companies there not being hosted,

i notice on the whois data, that it says "client transfer prohibited" does this mean if i was to transfer some of my .co.uk names

to a different company who offer cheaper renewals that they wont allow me?

It's (pretty much) just to stop your domains being 'stolen'.

For your .uk domains you need only ask the old provider(s) to change the IPSTAG to that of your new provider and they will do so.

Some charge a fee if you want to transfer away from them.

If a provider tries to charge you over £10+vat, you can usually go straight to Nominet and get the IPSTAG changed for exactly that price. We change IPSTAGS for free and think that all domain providers should too - all they need to do is send an automated PGP encrypted email to Nominet and automatically process the callback response.
