Launching a new car parts site next year.

I'm wondering about dashes and about .co.uk and .com

carlton car parts

carlton-car-parts.com
or
carltoncarparts.com
or
carltoncarparts.co.uk
or
carlton-car-parts.co.uk

I will buy all of them, but which should I register for google?

FunkyBear offers some good advice here - I agree CarltonCarParts.co.uk I think is better, and yes never post what domains you want to buy as someone will snap them up.

Good luck with the new project :D

carltoncarparts.co.uk
And a word of advice. Don't post what you are going to register, do it, register them as I've known of occasions where unscruplous individuals will go and register them then hold you to ransom!

carltoncarparts.co.uk - This does it for me too.

I always imagine how I would spell a domain name to a person when I choose them. Dashes don't fare well when you try to spell your domain name out. People might get confused, do I type a '-' or do i spell it out 'dash'.

Don't bother registering all the versions of your website under the sun. As above, i've had customers who have bought every single conceivable way of writing their web address..it doesn't do sod all in the grand scheme of things. Just stick with the standard .co.uk and order it QUICK! before someone else does.

I do believe it was Matt Cutts himself though who suggests domain names with dashes between the words are best for the search engine side of things?

Not quite true as far as I can recall. The arguement was about using dashed or underscores. Not about it in general.

Out of my personal experience allinone domains fare much better than all-in-dashes domains. I also would always go for the .co.uk version of a domain when the targeted audience is in the UK.

You should definitely go for without dash .co.uk domain. Country specific domains are better placed on Google Charts (google.co.uk). As your visitors will be from UK, a .co.uk domain will give you quicker and better results on google rankings.
