I am looking into buying a domain name, and have seen different prices, and was hoping someone could advise on a trusted domain registration company. I have seen the same domain (.com) on two different sites, one at £7.99 and one at £24.99 ???

Anyone able to offer some advice?

Thanks

Yeah, 123-reg are good.

Alternatively you could register your domain with a host and get hosting at the same time. A lot of web hosts don't make money on their domain sales, where as domain registrars do :)

All the best

If you are registering a .com then it is recommend you do so directly with an ICANN Accredited Registrar rather than a reseller as this will give you more control ultimately. The cost of the registration can vary due to the level of service provided - i.e. do you get telephone support and a dedicated control panel included in the cost. You should also consider the location of the company you register with, in terms of being able to contact them. You will see from the above link there are not that many UK ICANN Accredited Registrars, so more than likely the majority of UK companies selling top level domains (.com, .net, .org etc) will be acting as a reseller for an Accredited Registrar.

123-Reg are fine but as B&H says a web host offers this as an added value service, rather than something they derive profit from, so a good web host can be substantially cheaper for domains than the likes of 123-Reg.

What support response times do you get from your domain registrar? For a decent web host with good response times you're looking in the region of 15 minutes, we certainly aim to respond within 15 minutes. From what I hear most registrars will take hours or days to get back to you. It's such a high volume business, that for them I guess it doesn't make sense to offer as fast response times.

There's really no benefit in going directly with an ICANN Accredited registrar. If you're buying domains as a consumer you'll pay more, and likely get far worse service as you're not using them for anything else which could subsidise or justify the management costs.

If you're looking to get hosting as well it can certainly work out more cost effective and simpler to get your domain provided by your hosting provider. Any decent web host will register your domain in your name and give you full control of it, and the ability to leave. Just make sure you go with a reputable host and check the terms of service.

    Good luck :)
