Domain in web designers name ...

Hi,

In regards to a domain for my company that the web designer has placed in their own name and address, (.co.uk).

a, can they do this
They already have
b, do nominet allow it
they already have
c, can they charge me to release the name
Yes, worse than that they can refuse and it will all get messy.

Thanks.

If you have a contract for the job, then the domain name should be in there. If you have an invoice then possibly the domain will be on that. It depends on the wording of it all.

Thanfully Nominet are superb at dealing with this sort of thing.

Its not impossible to get your domain back if you can prove you have a better claim to it. My Space managed to get their .co.uk domain although the original owner won it back on appeal I think.

From my understanding, if they have registered the domain knowing that you would want it and for the sole purpose of selling it back to you at a higher price then you should be able to get it awarded back to you by Nominet.

It isn't like that Tom (i don't think anyhow), I believe the OP is talking about his design company building and hosting his site, but having registered the domain to themselves rather than him.

I encourage all my clients to register the domain themselves. Some arent happy to attempt this not matter how much I tell them it is easy so I register it for them but in thier name.

I do have it in my terms and conditions that the domain belongs to them etc. but I have them on autorenewal unless they say otherwise etc...

Have you got a contract with them - if so does it mention it anywhere.

Sorry you are having to experience this.
