does a 301 transfer a penalty?

had a few internal pages spanked by penguin and have done different things to different pages to see what will work and what wont. But I also completely rewrote a page on a new file and now have that in place of the old one. trouble is the old one is referred to in a fair few pages on my blog and has a few inlinks as well from other sources. If I did a 301 redirect so google know there is one page and not to be confused by the two would it also carry the penguin penalty over as well. Or should I leave it as it is incase google had a problem with the links to the page??

IMHO Yes. Penguin is mostly about anchor text so any penalty would remain. Are you sure it was the Penguin?

yep, 100%. with me the homepage hasnt been effected, had no warnings from google and still rank very well for some very competitive phrases. just got to wait for penguin to update again and see what has worked and what they dont like

One theoretical way to quickly to solve the problem might be a 301 redirect following the logic:

• 301 redirect “transfers” the link power (which means links pointing to one particular domain will now point to a new one);
• By transferring the link power, 301-redirect indirectly transfers rankings ;
• There is neither evidence nor official statement proving that 301-redirect transfers any other domain scores and records (like reputation, penalties, etc)
• So by using 301 redirect, you may transfer the link power and thus restore the former rankings of the old domain.

I think Penguin is mistaken for a system that has been in place for some time, then makes you worry and make more of a mess

Google ranks stuff and then applies filters like Panda, Penguin on top.
Panda does not seem to follow 301.

The verdict is still out on Penguin.

After 301 some sites hold, some do not.

There was a Panda refresh on 5 days before penguin was rolled out.

It may be sites people "think" were Penguined but were actually Panda'd are holding (until Panda re-assesses the site and drops it again) and the ones that are dropping within a few days are the genuine Penguins, but at the moment its too early to say for sure.

Right now some sites hold after 301 and some crash again after 4-7 days.

No, most people i know that were affected seem to have been hit site wide, but they are in very aggressive markets.

Earlier I noticed a very expensive and previously well ranking UK finance domain has down the gurgler, would not fancy having to explain that one!

Some sites are affected less, losing some keywords though. One of mine is like that, a 5 year old site i have not built links for for over a year with a load of old syndicated articles pointing at it got partially hit, lost 50% of its traffic.

They are not daily, MC confirmed Penguin like Panda is periodic. Penguin seemed to refresh a couple of days ago, roughly 2 weeks in. Panda is less frequent.

The analysis is too detailed to be done in real time..

Its not hard to hit this filter really... I posted a few articles a couple of years back... Good ones. It seems over the past few years they spread and were re used, which was kind of the point at the time they were posted... I mean before Panda/Penguin exsisted.. it happened to businesses / websites on a daily basis regardless.

I used to own a PR6 site which was built off free themes, that got hit back in the day, same it would do now. Because it is an un-natural spike.

The fight against SPAM is far from over, they know that so do we. They are being a bit more stringent and letting us know that.

As you said, the bigger issue for them is the content/articles being published, not the sources.
