I'm in process of launching a new site which is currently being prepared on my web developers server.
I think it's quite a big site carrying over 150,000 products.
the way our cart works is that we must 'generate' our site to publish any changes made to the site.

i was wondering whether other common ecommerce carts work in the same way?

the reason i ask is because i find this generation procedure rather tedious and cumbersome; because my site now has so many products i am having probems with timeouts etc and the developers have taken away my ability to generate because it is slowing their web servers until they can find a solution.

I've had some clients with pretty large product catalogues but i'm not sure what your "generate/publish" step is about. Most e-commerce solutions ""generate" pages on the fly as they are requested by visitors. Do you know what e-commerce solution your developer is using for you?

We set up e-commerce solutions of your size with these rules. Keep the website and the database on seperate servers. The database should be on a server dedicated to database work. The more demanding the website, the more important it is to use a good hosting company.

I would have to say that even thou you have 150k plus products that should not affect speed in which pages are generated that much, what will affect it more is how many people are on your site at the same time looking for different things.

Even so, the database engines which are usually included with the hosting plans are fairly quick to do the job.

maybe the issue is with the coding(not being done for speed) or perhaps the images used (of the products) are not optimised for web.

It can be any number of issues.

Feel free to send me a PM with the site and I will have a quick look to see if it is anything obvious.

Kind regards,

It's unusual - most ecommerce sites work off a live database, so as soon as you click publish/make live it's up there.

You really need to discuss why the current site works like this, and if it can be changed to work of a live database.

One other option is to set an automatic nightly publish job that sets all new products live. A bit annoying as new items may not show up for a whole day, but at least if it runs at 4am it should be when the site and server is otherwise quiet (assuming you are mainly UK based)
