No. But obviously, if you're not VAT registered, you can't claim import VAT back.

You may also get some unscrupulous sellers trying to charge you VAT when they should not.

No. But you do not need a VAT number to import from overseas. I have no idea if Alibaba specifically requires one - I don't see why they would.

You don't need a VAT number to import from anywhere.

As a business importer you do however need UK Economic Operator identification and registration (EORI ) number from HMRC . This is quick and easy to apply for on line. You do not need a VAT number although if you do have a VAT number the EORI will be linked to your VAT number.
