Hi there.

Firstly, opensiteexplorer (OSE) is probably one of the best tools out there for link building.

From your question it is hard to tell what you are hoping for though. OSE will help you to find link building opportunities (just as any other decent tool will), but it will not help with the actual link building.

Quite simply; there is no tool that will build any links that are actually worth having. You need to learn how to do link building - it's a very manual process, but if you do it right the results are worth the effort.

The main tools I use for link building are:
Google
Excel
OSE
Twitter

That's it basically.

All terrible replies above, you'd end up going off on a tangent if you follow any of that advice. Forget Open Site Explorer and building backlinks for now.

First off - post a link to your site and I'll look it and give you some pointers.

I'm guessing you will be working in a set geographic location, or at least thats where most of your bread and butter work will be. You might be able to rank for a few search terms via on page signals alone.

I googled you and can only find your facebook page at the minute...

I have been shown by a respected SEO guy a free download (watch their video first) called SEO Spyglass. It shows what links your competitors have and I found it quite useful.
Another vote for SEO Spyglass.

It does nothing to help SEO, but gives you the most deep and insightful reports on your competitors, who links to them, using what anchor text, from PR? sites and PR? pages (where ? is specified in the report), domain age, page age, number of other outbound links on the page, everything you could ever want to know.

It basically, roughly speaking, gives you a gods mind when trying to fully appreciate your competitor, who they are, how they achieved their positions.

Then... what you do is up to you, ie manually follow links and build some back to you, from the pages you are able to.

Best tool ever, as regards insightfulness. $99 or $250, depending whether you want the developer or private user edition (one generates reports for clients on PDF files, the other doesnt). I have developer but will be downgrading to standard, they both do the same job, with the exception of the PDF reports.

I tried open site explorer but found it wasnt anywhere near as good or helpful, in my very humble opinion.
