Distance learning accountancy courses?

Sorry for posting two threads in this forum in two days but I was wondering if anyone knew of any good distance learning accountancy courses I could take? I'm really interested in learning as much as I can about accountancy as I can. I've run my own Limited company a couple of times and just about managed OK but I've never been VAT registered and I'm confused.

I think it would be much better if I did an accountancy course and learned everything properly. Unfortunately for various reasons I can only take a distance learning course. Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

Thanks :).

Actually thinking about it if you could just recommend some books that would be fine. I don't need a qualification I just need to know what I am talking about when running my own business all of the VAT laws and so on. So books would be fine.

The problem is that if you don't follow a structure and / or have access to some form of tuition, you could easily misinterpret something.

Accountancy and tax is a very broad subject. There are lots of books on just one aspect.

You could easily waste a lot of your time with no result.

If you want to learn for the purposes of your own business, rather than to pick up the knowledge of an an accountant, there are short courses and 'for dummies' style books for VAT etc.

It depends how much you want to learn ...

The real problem you have in learning accountancy is that any online accountancy course will teach you aspects of accountancy and tax that will be totally irrelevant to you.

Do you want to gain an accounting qualification?

Ah. OK. Yeah I see what you mean. I've already run two limited companies in the past (which unfortunately failed) and I did all of the accounting for it on my own. But this time I need to be VAT registered and I have no idea at all about what I need to do regarding that. Furthermore I'd also like to revise my basic accountancy skills since this new business idea will mean a lot more buying and selling which will complicate things further. I also need to refresh my knowledge of any tax breaks I can get as I'll be really strapped for cash with this business so every little helps.

I doubt I'll be making a profit for at least 3 years so my cashflow has to cover running the business for that length of time.

Even just recommending a good A-level or first year undergraduate level book would be a big help to me. I might as well teach myself everything that I can. I am a completely self taught computer programmer so I am used to teaching myself things.

Thank you for the reply :).

No I don't need a qualification although getting one wouldn't hurt. I just need to learn enough to handle the accountancy for my own VAT registered limited company. I've run limited companies before and have done the accounting for that I've just never been VAT registered before. See my post above this one for more information.

Thank you for the reply :).

You'd certainly learn the basics from something like AAT but its so very easy through lack of knowledge to miss something which ends up costing a lot.

If tax interests you ATT would be much more relevant to the tax aspects of small business accounting.

Then you will need to spend time doing CPD courses to ensure that your knowledge is up to date ... things change very quickly in this profession.
