As above, and don't leave it until the end of the year! I have just had a direct debit taken from my account in error, because the local council mixed up the last two digits of another customer's reference number and so billed me for his leisure centre membership.
The council uses AUDDIS - this new(ish) system allows money to be taken out of a bank account without the account-holder authorising his bank to do so!!
My bank has refunded the money, but worryingly the Financial Ombudsman doesn't seem to think the Direct Debit Guarantee applies. Quote: 'In this case, as Mr M had not authorised a direct debit, the direct debit guarantee was not strictly relevant'. See:
