Developing an App.

Just wondering if anybody has any experience in creating and developing Apps?

Basically I have an idea for an App which to my knowledge will be one of a kind as there isn't anything similar on the market as of yet!

My questions are..
How difficult would I find it to create and develop an App?
Would I require a specialist to undertake the project for me?

Any advice appreciated.

Virtually non existent in this field..

It's achievable, but it's not easy to just become a developer. It will take a lot of time depending on your spec.

It all depends on how you wish to plan this venture. If you value your time (i.e. learning how to develop mobile apps) more than your money, then you'd use any capital you have (if you do have any) to outsource this and, prior to that, patent your idea.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you are going to outsource this - be formal in everything you do during specification and pricing. There's thread upon thread here of people getting into sticky situations because they didn't.

For someone with no programming knowledge I would say it's very difficult but it all depends on the complexity of the app. I found app development easy but then I've got 20 years experience programming and know Java very well. I suggest learning the basics of Java and if you pick that up easy then you should pick up Android dev easy.

I would say, outsource the development since you have no experience there. Development is only a small part. There is a lot of other work to do - design (user experience, requirements etc) of the app, how to market, how to monetize etc etc. So I am sure you will be occupied. Just an opinion :)

Yes we have experience of apps.

Want to do it yourself as a non-programmer? Your best bet would be to find an online provider which lets you build an app without programmer, something like tiggzi.com. There are plenty of these around. They can be limiting and you will be paying a monthly fee but its certainly an option.

I have a talk in Cambridge recently on the state of mobile development, the link to our blog post is here which links to the slides.

My "app" I assume you mean for mobile devices like iphone, ipad, or android. Developing the app is only half the story really. To make it successful in the market is critical. So you have to get it into the app store or google play and get your keywords optimised and do a awful lot of work to prompt it within the store.

The first question you need to answer before taking any of the previous advice is 'what platform(s) do you want to target?'

The next question would be 'what do you want the app to do?'

But the second question is between you and the developer.

But to answer your questions on the information given:

How difficult would I find it to create and develop an App?
It would require a total career change.

Would I require a specialist to undertake the project for me?
You could run the project yourself but would need specialists to complete individual parts of the project like the programming.

Considering you asked those questions I would assume you know nothing about software development. So simple answer to these questions
1) very difficult
2) yes

If you are wanting to make a life change and move into software development I would say fire away and start developing yourself, allow a few years before you reach reasonable performance - if you are looking at this app seriously as a business then get others to do it. If you are concerned about protection get a signed non-disclosure documents and go with someone reliable and preferably closer to home (because enforcement of a non-disclosure elsewhere will be very tricky).

If you lack money but have time to put in the project then why not build a partnership with someone ? Bear in mind that any reasonable developer will be paid very well and ideas are pretty cheap (it's what comes afterwards that's tricky) so you will need to show you are really willing to put work into any go-to-market strategy.

Hi,

Creating software for smart phones, or personal computers is very similar to other engineering disciplines. It involves a good deal of learning, hard work, and experience.

In case you know nothing about computer programming, you should start by learning a little about computer programs. Web sites like codecademy can be a good starting point, later you could move to learning sites like lynda and pluralsite.

Generally it's better to focus on your own area of expertise and hire someone else for the engineer tasks.

Over all, it can be a very nice hobby if you got a strong temperament.

Thank you,
Naeem.

If you have web development experience (css, html, javascript) there are also some nice tools which allow cross-platform mobile development. These tools are generally more suitable for less complex apps.

A good example of this is http://www.feedhenry.com/. With feedhenry you create your application using an online environment then have 'one click' deployment to Android, iOS etc..

Couldn't agree more!
