Im looking to rent a dedicated server. Should host Linux and and Apache and PHP/MYSQL. Should allow unlimited emails from server and unlimited bandwidth.

123 reg seem to have a good offer at £69 a month. Is this a good deal? or is there something better outthere.

Your views please

That seem a very good price just wondering have you got your self mindset on 123 reg or can other hosting companies make you a offer.

Just that I would like to make you a offer just not sure if you have your mindset on 123 reg or not.

unlimited bandwidth.

There's no such thing...

123reg have an "acceptable use policy" which reads:

Irresponsible usage

Customers acknowledges that they have a responsibility to ensure that their connection is not used in an irresponsible manner. 123-reg deem irresponsible use of the services to include, but not be limited to, sending unsolicited e-mail ("spamming"), attempting to breach the security of a 3rd party machine, flooding Usenet by placing a single post in a large number of newsgroups, and if a service with unlimited or uncapped data usage is abused to the extent that it detrimentally affects other customer's services.
In the event that a customer's services are used for any purpose that 123-reg deem irresponsible then 123-reg reserve the right to suspend service while the usage is investigated in consultation with the customer. Should investigation determine that the service has been used irresponsibly, 123-reg reserve the right to terminate the customer's account with immediate effect. Wherever possible the customer will be notified in advance of any termination.

All "unlimited" space and bandwidth hosts state similar.

You are far better getting a dedicated server with a contract which shows exactly what you are allowed to use, or 95% percentile. That way, all parties know exactly how much can be used before it becomes a problem and not a simple "we think it's too much so we will terminate your account" (read: "you are not making us enough profit, so we don't want your custom any more).

Going with a large company is a good thought, however going with an overselling company could be a bad decision..

There is no unlimited bandwidth or disk space. You are likely to get trapped in AUP and TOS for such things, and then repent on your decision to choose such a hosting company. And moreover, I would highly recommend you to go with a company that offers popular control panel such as WHM/Cpanel on their linux servers. If you go with a company that offers custom control panel, it will be a nightmare later, when you wish to migrate your data across to a new provider.

We offer fully managed and monitored servers with free whm/cpanel on our linux servers..

Also, the server will need to be setup with a good power backup, just incase of power failure.

In real life a UPS is only going to keep things going for less than one hour, probably more like 20 mins and then only if all network switches and routers are also powered by the UPS.

The purpose in office/home situations is really to ensure orderly shutdown on power failure and to survive short outages.

It all depends on how important uptime is.

I second the idea of co-location - that'll cost you up to - what, £60-100/month? Less if you hire a virtual server.

Any halfway respectable colo company will have redundant cooling, power, backups and networking far in excess of anything you'd lay on yourself. You can't even get the leased line for £60-100/month, never mind everything else. Running your own server on your own site makes sense if you're serving large files to other people who are also on your own site - it makes no sense at all if you're serving stuff to people elsewhere on the Internet.

Another solution would be to host the web server myself. Anybody know how I can get broadband to handle the downloads?
thanks

Hi,

Most broadband providers have TOS against using your broadband for hosting services.

The main question is are you an experienced linux server admin who can manage/administrate the server? This will determine whether you should go for an unmanaged or managed server

And have you ever dealt with server hardware? This will determine if you should colo a server or not, as with colo you're responsible for the hardware.

Regards,
Suhail.

Home hosting, not if you want reliability. Go for a good Dedicated server host, I very much doubt you will use the majority of bandwidth most dedicated servers have these days, Typicaly 5000GB+ per month. If you don't have server admin experience again you should look at a managed server, costs vary but we do server management from £50/m on top of any monthly server charges if you also take one of our servers. otherwise go for a good unmanaged dedicated server or VPS.
I would recommend Poundhost for unmanaged Uk servers. www.poundhost.com

We agree with everybody else - not a good idea. Don't forget ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Broadband - as the word Asymmetric suggests its different speeds for download/upload. So ADSL is great for surfing etc but with your in-house server it will need to send data the otherway (upload) which will be much slower.

SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) would be the answer (download/upload speeds the same) if available in your area but then that could cost you an arm and leg, plus you still have all the other issues of UPS, security etc etc

Hi,

I have used fasthosts.co.uk for 6 years now and have 12 servers with them. The control system are so flexible and they support multipe operating system such as linux/windows.

They have KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) through a sperate control interface (Java) just in case you lock yourself out like i did when i was manipulating the iptables in linux.

Their up time is fantastic although they state 99.99% i have not experienced any downtime except for a major fire with BT (out of their control and many suppliers affected).

I rate them 10/10.
