Hi Everyone

Should i think about dedicated hosting for a site that gets 500 visitors a day?

At the moment its on shared so thinking of moving it

Anyone have any experience of doing the same previously?

Many Thanks

Rob

I wouldn't have said 500 visitors per day is justified for a dedicated box unless your site is resource intensive or chewing up bandwidth.

You may want to consider a VPS as a "halfway house" though between shared and dedicated hosting.

+1 on the VPS, it's a great option for people who don't quite need the power of dedicated. Plus you get more control :)

UK FAST based in Manchester. Freephone and normal 01 landline no to ring for support 24 hours a day!

One member of the sales staff is very pushy with all the sales nonsense giving it all the special deals they have on just for the day, but speak to the rest of the sales staff and they are really good and helpful.

Amazing host.

Another vote for Vidahost Rob.

I have vps with them and can't fault them. I think you'd be fine with a shared hosting plan tbh - it really depends what you are doing on your sites rather than the actual number of visitors.

Any good shared web hosting account should be able to sustain 500 visits per day (unless every visitor is downloading >20MB of data each).

Our Premier accounts which are on shared servers will handle 500 or more standard visitors a day.

500 visits/day isn't a lot however if they are valuable visitors and downtime would be costly, you should look to the best solution you can afford (cost/benefit wise).

For example - our own site is very simple, plain HTML, and would be fine on any of our shared services. But it's extremely valuable to us and is therefore hosted accordingly.

Feel free to call us on 0800 047 0417 or email [email protected] and we can put together a good solution at a sensible price :)

Are they still claiming to own the DC they use in Manchester??? (I don't mean the one they purchased and haven't actually started work on yet).

UK Fast give more bull than FastHosts

And it's only a Tier II facility (compared to us with Tier III at Bluesquare Maidenhead, and Tier IV at BSQ Milton-Keynes), and it's in Manchester which is far away from London so there's no way it can be the 'fastest' (not that x milliseconds in network latency has an impact over the hundreds of milliseconds of processing time most sites require anyway), etc etc.
