The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) Are a UK charity who handle debt management for FREE: http://www.cccs.co.uk/
Anyone finding themselves getting into debt should contact them asap. No need to go with expensive commercial companies who will charge you for their services. - Gina :)

If you just want plain, simple debt management, then CCCS is what I recommend. I personally DON'T recommend payplan, as they are not very nice folks IMO. Just my experience as I used to work in debt management, and I would get sick of them ringing clients to say that the company I worked for had gone out of business, and they had to go to them, and had no choice. Obviously this was total rubbish, and it made me wonder what these people got out of sending debtors into a blind panic.

If you want the better service, and don't mind paying for it, then Eurodebt/Pentagon UK are one of the biggest in the country.

If he needs advice on very basic personal debt (credit cards and unsecured loans) then everytime i would recommend giving the national debtline a call, they are a charitable organisation and can give you advice over the phone and will send you a pack out showing you what letters to send etc. If he doesn't have complex issues he will be able to use the templates and get into some agreement with the companies himself.

I deal with debt on a daily basis (mainly company debt) and to be honest if your friends debt is large and he cannot ever see a way of paying it off it might be better to look at bankruptcy / debt relief order (if £15k or under and doesn't own a house) - without knowing the exact details etc it is difficult to advise.
