This has came up a few times Kenny, Over the phone is slightly if not more professional as your clients will be taking payments directly from someone on the phone.

Some people are sometimes typing in there details on a webpage.

If you do consider taking payments through your website then you should probably speak to your merchant services provider for advidce on this.

However, as Spark say above, it is always nicer if people can speak to someone to make a payment.

All the best

You could always offer both? Most online payment providers bundle their payment gateway (for website payments) with a virtual terminal that enables you to process payments over the phone or by mail order, so you can leave the choice to your customers.

Best wishes

Think about the PCI DSS here - MOTO payment require a higher level and even perhaps DPA registration.

I would rather pay through a secure server and a known PSP (i.e.SagePay/Barclays etc) than give my details to a person whom I do not know, on the end of a phone - who could have written them on a piece of paper, which is then lost, misplaced, abused......

Hi Kenny,

Chances are you will have clients that want the ability to pay by either method - it is worth asking a few to gauge opinion. As already mentioned, many Payment Gateways/Payment Service Providers - including ourselves - will give you the ability to accept payments both ways (via a website and over the telephone) so both bases are covered. We get plenty of merchants calling us each day to set up a Virtual Terminal for MOTO (Mail Order / Telephone Order) payments due to the demand from their customers for this payment method.

If you would like some assistance setting this up - including setting up the required merchant account - I would be happy to help.
