DDP tracking number from China?

Hi,

First timer importing here:

I have ordered some product from China. It is coming via sea freight and I have chosen DDP for delivery type.

I have asked the seller for a tracking number but they said “items have been sent and we will send DPD express. Don’t worry”

Is this normal? Do I not need to worry about a tracking number? Or am I being fobbed off because they haven’t actually sent them yet and they are buying more time?

DDP is the delivery type I have chosen.

And they said it will DPD express in my local… so I’m assuming they mean the courier will be DPD over here in the UK.

That’s what I thought. So is it normal practice to have a tracking number even when using DDP method?

Does not DDP mean Delivered Duty Paid ie the seller has fulfilled their responsibilities when the goods are placed with shippers and cleared for import

You should get info from the courier DPD once goods are in their system but assume that would not be until they arrive in the UK?

Why on earth would you not get tracking information before the item arrives in the UK? And how would the shipper specify which courier to use upon arrival in the UK?

Is DPD Express are actually taking care of the whole shipping process then from China to UK yes he would get full tracking through his account

You should get tracking from DPD as the consignment will be handled by their partners in China

The sea shipment will arrive at either Felixstowe or Southampton.

Once cleared UK customs, DPD will take over and deliver to your address (DDP) Delivered Duty Paid.

You have received the DPD tracking number for delivery to your door, but will not get any tracking information until after the goods have cleared UK customs.

I always used to get the consignment numbers and the name of the ship from my agents, which I could then use to keep an eye on where the vessel is.

That would have been for the sea freight part only.

If sending using DDP from China, you'll get the DPD (or DHL, UPS etc) tracking number when the shipment leaves China, but not get any tracking information until DPD have collected after clearing UK customs.

I have just read through the thread. Your discussion has been incredibly beneficial to me so thank all of you. I understand that I won’t receive the tracking number until DPD get the goods in the UK (which I estimate to be around 50 days). I will provide an update in a couple of months.

Well, according to @MY OFFICE IN CHINA, you should get the tracking number when the goods leave China, you just won't get any tracking updates until the goods arrive in the UK and clear customs.

Correct.

Sometimes the China supplier will not want to give it to the customer at the start of the shipment as the customer becomes impatient if there aren't any updates. The tracking update will only happen when DPD have the consignment after clearing UK customs.
