good morning all :)

just a quick request today.

does anybody know of a "cheap" database template supplier???

or do any of our lovely ukbf members build databases if so please let me know an idea of costs :)

not looking for anything hugely complicated just a good solid set up that i can add to and edit with some simple instructions on how to link it with a website :)

I would suggest that any old "database template" would likely not be suitable, your individual need will likely not be met as the structure would be completely wrong.

Firstly what are you trying to achieve? a website with pages, content etc then go for an off the shelf CMS system like Drupal or Joomla (or even wordpress if you like being hacked), this would give you all the tools you need to update and manage a website.

Otherwise you will really need to have a Database (and management interface) specifically written for your needs and the cost will very much depend on what those needs are.

Hi

I don't know of any database template resources, but maybe someone will come along and correct me..

A couple of questions to help understand your requirements... It sounds like you have a website, and you want your website to be able to connect to the database.
1) What sort of website do you have presently? Is it straight forward HTML, does it use scripting, or is it a content management system? Who built it for you? Maybe you could post the URL in this thread, or PM it to me?
2) What sort of data do you want the database to contain? Again, if you want to avoid going public, you're welcome to PM me.

thanks for all the responses.
ok a brief explanation

a friend and me are working on a website at the moment it will eventually advertise local companies for free to students across the country.
the DB will need to include region, county, city, type of business, name, address, number etc and the whole thing needs to be simple to update and merge with the webpages so that someone can search quickly and easily through the info.
we have already done most of the work by hand including information gathering just struggling at the moment with the sheer size of the site and considering updating it to a database before launch (originally we were going to upgrade after the first year).
i hope that gives you some more ideas anything else just ask and i will try to answer :)

As others have already mentioned a 'template' is not really the way to go. You'll have specific needs which will be best addressed using a developer that will design an appropriate normalised schema, considering things like indexing requirements, stored procedures and so on. In addition you need to consider whether it will be MSSQL or MySQL based, this will generally be determined by you opting for an ASP.NET or PHP based site.

Any time you invest now will likely save you much time and hassle in the future. Based upon what you have described it is not particularly complex, you just need to locate a good developer to guide you through the process.

the DB will need to include region, county, city, type of business, name, address, number etc and the whole thing needs to be simple to update and merge with the webpages so that someone can search quickly and easily through the info.

You need to sit down with a DB designer and run through all the data (types and example values and descriptive names) that you want to keep, how the data inter-relates to other data items, what can and cant be updated, how you want the search to work etc -

From that detail they'll be able to derive a diagram of the tables, and then the design / definition of the database etc.

Depending on the amount of data, they amount you want to spend, the scripting language you want the site in, the type of hosting you have/want etc will help determine the database type (from flat files, to psuedo relational, to full relational) etc

The more you specify it for yourself in advance, the quicker and cheaper the task could be.

Cost - anything from £250 to £20k :D

As others have stated, best to get a solid set of requirements written down then chat through them with a developer.

I'm not sure where you are at with any existing development, or what your future requirements might be, but these will all affect the solution you implement now.

From the brief glimpses you give, I would suggest taking a look at Joomla with either the Sobi2 directory or JReviews, both give options for company submissions/paid submissions, can include reviews, map locations and whole load of other options.

I develop databases, but don't like to reinvent the wheel - the options above might meet your needs at a fraction of the cost of a bespoke development.
