Data cabling and electrical work prices

I

Ian Madeley

We're moving into new offices shortly (approx 200 sq m over 2 floors) and will need Cat5e data points and new mains power sockets installed.
I'm starting to get quotes in and have had wildly differing prices.
What should I expect to pay per data outlet and per double mains socket for a quality installation?
Any help would be really appreciated.

Hi,

A bit of a difficult one to answer as there are so many variables involved in regards to access, length of cable runs, containment, available power etc etc etc but as a rough guide you can expect to pay £30-50 per network outlet for a standard install.
Kind regards,

Matthew

Yeah, roughly £30-50. Prices per point would drop slightly if you've got loads to do. Best thing to do is ask for references of the work done previously. Any reputable firm will be more than happy to let you have a couple clients who have had them in to do a cabling job.

This brings to mind the Tommy Cooper sketch with him holding a violin and a painting......

I've yet to see a decent Cat5/6 install by an electrical contractor, they seem to treat all wire the same regardless.

Let me know if you're near Twickenham, I don't charge per point but price at £300 for a day's work plus materials. My working day is an early start and a late finish.

I would agree you would be looking to pay around £30 - £50 per network point but as stated before there are a lot of variables to consider,

being in an office are the points going into floor boxes or dado/trunking. Also the price would differ on the amount of network points required.

What type of Wall/floor standing cabinet if required and of what U size and don't forget the depth of the Cabinet if you have deep switches/servers going in and allowing room for patching and being able to close the front door of the cab !!!

Prices have fallen since the mid 1990s when I did loads of Cat 5 cable installs, used to average out about £45 per point, excluding the cabinet.

Not done any actual installations for a long time, but fixed more than a few where sparkies did the cable pulling, they treat everything the same as 2.5mm T&E and will hang off it to pull it through a small duct. Miraculously, the cable will then pass their tests, but when used for gigabit ethernet it works badly if it all.

Still, if they carry on doing it, people will carry on paying me to sort out the problems, so I should be grateful.
