Cycle leader/trainer

Hello all,

Bit of an odd one this.

I've been into cycling for many years - purely for recreation, fun and fitness.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, at my wife's request, i took one of her colleagues and his wife out for a bike ride, both who'd not been on a bike for years but had bought bikes to get fit again. They both enjoyed it and were surprised at the distance that we covered - and claimed this is the kick up the backside that they needed - as most rides that they tried to plan were too local to be interesting!

The guy has since rung me up and asked if I could plan and take them out on another ride, this time with a further friend of theirs. They did say that they knew i was busy with work but they'd be happy to pay me for my time and suggested £10 each. Not a huge hourly rate but £30 for doing something that i enjoy for a couple of hours - so i agreed.

Anyway, that went ok and the guy suggested that i perhaps put an ad in the local shop window - as he believes there are plenty out there with bikes and the desire to have a go again to get fit, who just simply don't know how to go about it - i.e. how far to go first time - meaning that most either do a mile and get bored as it's only a 10 min or so trip, or either do 20 miles, almost kill themselves and give up for another 10 years.

Got me thinking, sounded like a plan.

But, if i was to do this - would i need insurance or some form of qualification?

There are courses out there - but seem quite costly at upwards of £300, similarly insurance - and i'd rather just try it for now rather thank fork out first and realise that i've got very few customers and very little business.

Any thoughts?

Also, just to add - the chap has also asked if i can teach children to ride bikes too?

I've got 3 kids of my own, ages 3, 2 and 11 months, so as yet - not done any of this - but certainly an option for the future. I started to get our eldest on his bike with stabilisers a few months back and it's a slow old process, but am carefully making notes as to how it's done. Thing is - people pay to have their kids learn to swim, i had lessons myself at a local hotel - £120 for 12 lessons when i was younger - that was myself and my sister for an hour - so £240 for 12 hours work - again, not bad for a hobby!

Your thoughts would be appreciated!
