Hi,

Can anybody recommend any companies who would print packaging for a cosmetic product.

I have already had the design created but I now require it to be manufactured

Initially I wanted 1000 boxes making in full colour do you think this number would be to low for most printing companies?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Considering this is supposed to be a UK forum it grinds my gears that every time a sourcing thread comes up, far too many people's first reaction is suggest sourcing from China. In many case it's not always the cheapest, best or most reliable option, especially for start-ups and those wanting relatively small quantities.

Re China ...as the saying goes - why have a dog & bark yourself? (if they want to sell their services to the world for a pittance, I'm all for it). Fast forward a few years & well surely look back on this era & shake our heads with disbelief at how cheaply we used to source things for!

I get my packaging done via my Asian suppler ...he speaks their language - I don't.

You assume everything revolves around bottom line pricing. It makes a refreshing change to see someone else is standing up and looking for UK suppliers.

In the end we opted to go down the China route :D

For an initial run of printing (which we upped to 3000 units) from a UK based firms quotes came in at £0.90 right up £2.40 per box  - The cost in china is 34p it was a no brainer really!

So your 1000 boxes from China will cost £1.02. Plus shipping, plus delay in shipping, plus storage for the 2,000 unwanted, plus problems of communication.

AS you say its a no brainer.

The price is inclusive of shipping , Communication has not been a problem the template for packaging was sent the boxes got manufactured and are currently in transit ... no delays so far! :D

Why would we have 2000 unwanted units o_O We upped to the amount as we needed more than 1000 hence why an order of 3000 was made.

It was a no brainer ...why pay more for the same service?

    Why be so negative!

The flip side is the following:

He will need much more as the final price of his product will be MUCH cheaper.

We ship 20 - 50 containers per month and very very rarely experience delays of more than 2 or 3 days.

Storage - The cartons are flat and take up little room.

Communication problems? - Some factories speak (and write) better than many of the posters on this (UK) forum.

I am all for buying in the UK, WHERE IT IS VIABLE, but you need to accept the fact that in the vast majority of cases, UK companies have priced themselves out of the market.

What about the import and customs charges ?
VAT is payable whether you are importing or buying direct from a supplier in the UK.

There is Zero Import Duty on card boxes.

Freight & UK charges are an important factor, often overlooked, when buying from China.

The OP should have done his homework to ensure he is using the most economic way to import to his destination.

Generally, for large loads, we always advise adding 5% - 10% to the cost of the product to cover the freight charges. For smaller loads this will increase and will depend on volume & weight.

Even allowing for all the above, the OP will save at least 50% on what he was quoted for from the cheapest UK supplier.

It is a no brainer. (As long as he has covered all of his bases to ensure the order process and shipping has been done correctly)

I would highly recommend the incredibly helpful Paul Kilby of Tee-Kay Packaging. Based in Peterborough they help clients across the globe and they're really well priced too... give them a shout, and if you could say I passed you his way that would be great... then I can twist his arm into buying me a cream cake or coffee :)
