Current VAT registration timescale

Has anybody done a recent VAT registration. How long did it take? HMRC are saying it takes 4 weeks?

Up to 4 weeks?

This will either be quickly – within 2-3 weeks, or longer, if your application is subject to further checks by HMRC.

If your application is subject to further checks, these can be for a number or reasons. HMRC is looking to “verify” that your operation is genuine, and will be trading in the UK – and as such warrants VAT registration.

I've done 2 over the past few weeks both have been processed within a few days. I tend to find that's typical now.

I would say within two weeks is the norm unless there are further questions or checks required by HMRC.

Check your online portal for any VAT messages and you will see what has been asked for.

It is likely to take longer if your business is involved in property too as additional checks and questionnaires are required to be completed as the VAT law in this area is often more complicated (e.g. 'option to tax' property).
