Current Developers causing us issues please help

The quality of the code behind both October CMS and Sylius is just a developer's dream.

October CMS is built on Laravel and Sylius is built on Symfony, arguably the two best PHP frameworks.

Both systems use MVC, so there's a very clear separation of concerns and they use Twig and YAML etc.

With them both being relatively new platforms, they don't have to be backward compatible with older versions. In fact both platforms have a minimum requirement of PHP 7.1.

Whilst October CMS and Sylius may be new platforms, they are built on very well established and current frameworks which appeal to developers.

MVC pah! The n-tier or LBOM design patterns used with web forms, VB.Net and a good old fashioned relational database will be back in fashion within the decade... mark my words!

Seriously, MVC was first touted in the 1970s but suddenly became a thing again around 2005 when they ran out of ways to sell tech books.

SaaS? Non-SQL storage? Cloud!? All been around for decades by different names, MVC will run out of steam and I can get back to my DIM A AS INTEGER. LET A=10. PRINT A. Proper programming

I understand the Print game and the website is just a basic frontend for getting designs sorted out, however as the business has grown you have a lot of Business/Production requirements going on in the background (Which I believe is what you really want re writing). As a software company getting Lead Developers to stay can always be a challenge so don't be too hard to criticise your present company they cannot predict the future, and that you thought it was an everlasting system Ironically this forum is full of hindsight so beware. I however agree with most of them but the key element will come from you no one else, you just need to write a bloody good spec, and all the Technology guys will present their reasons behind a specific technology (Basically because they understand it), you then need to make a decision and find the right team to do the work, simple really

Without actually seeing at least a sample of the current code, I don't see how anyone can make a recommendation or suggest a way forward.

If the current system is targeting a very early version of the Dot Net Framework and the code is really badly structured, not using a design pattern (be that MVC, n-tier or whatever), then a rewrite would be justified.

Choice of development language does has no bearing on the quality of the code.

ASP.Net is an excellent system, if used correctly.

In fact, if you look at the charts for the most in demand development languages of 2017, C# (an ASP.Net language) is well ahead of PHP, which says a lot.

Hence why the spec is the key element in this, then choose a bloody good developer based on what they have produced in the past, that is where I would start from. Good Luck

No it doesn't actually say anything. Demand charts are normally driven by the number of job adverts, so it could say it is more difficult to recruit C# programmers as there are less of them, or that with C# it is more difficult to retain programmers.
