Goes without saying - if you are computer literate, have MySQL knowledge, understand scripts, - etc, etc - VTiger might be an option. As long it is not visible to the public.

If it has to communicate, integrate, etc - well - even Wordpress might do the trick. It depends.

Otherwise you are in SugarCRM league, I posted my comments on another thread what to do and how to get something for free.

We tried a number of free CRMs and we couldn't get any of them to do what we wanted. We also tried Salesforce but it was too big and clunky for us. In the end we went for a relatively unknown cloud based platform called FLG 360 and it is great for our needs.Sorry, I can't find the URL but you could just google it.

We also use Capsule CRM. A good lightweight CRM system that doesn't break the bank.
Another one is Highrise CRM which is by 37signals who also built Basecamp, a Project Managment app.

Web CRMs are great, and so much better than trying to track everything in a spreadsheet.
