If someone else has taken a photo of me at an event, does the copyright belong to them? So do I need to ask for permission before I use it online for my own purposes?

I don't know what you mean by that I'm afraid... :|

I suppose I need to find out whether the photographer was working for themselves (in which case I need to talk to them) or for a company (in which case I presume the company own the copyright and I need to talk to them instead?). Then get written permission to use for my own purposes...will that be me covered?

The copyright for your image belongs to you and if they have not already sought it the photographer needs to get it from you to use it!

Politeness dictates that you should ask their permission before you attempt to use the image.

Most issues can be resolved by a friendly conversation!

A photographer owns the copyright to an image, and does not need a release form to take the photo (provided it was taken whilst you were in a public place).

The photographer is free to use the image as they wish and you will need to get permission from them to make use of it,

Depends, what was the event? If it was a private event and they were personally hired to take the photos then it's owned by the person that asked them to attend the event. If it was a public event, even if they were asked to take pictures or they just so happened to take this picture because they where there, then it is owned by the photographer.
