Convert Traffic to more Sales?

Hi,
I was reading some stats recently on averages for ecommerce sites, off the top of my head the average conversion rate was sub 5% for traffic from organic search listings. I guess that means if your site was "average" you could expect to be getting 3-5 orders a day with 70-100 visitors.

The bounce rate at 35% doesn't seem particularly high for an ecommerce site either.

Before looking at the web design I assume you've done your research and are confident your products and pricing are right?

I'm no web designer but looking at your site, if most traffic is landing on your homepage, you may want to look at making it more obvious to get from there to your product pages. I expected to see a "browse products" type link in the top navigation, it's not immediately obvious how you check out the products unless you scroll down the page.

I'd imagine it varies a lot by market sector, at a guess I'd say fashion (which seems to be the market the original poster is targetting) is more likely to have a lower conversion rate? For your site customers are probably searching with a specific need so you might expect a higher conversion rate whereas lots of people browse fashion sites without a specific purchase in mind just to see if something catches their eye.

My site conversion rate averages to about 5% across the month, daily traffic volumes are fairly constant although coversion rates tend to be higher Sunday-Tuesday.

Hi all, thanks. So far its a bit hit and miss with customer orders. Lot of google organic hits and a few orders over the weekend since i made the changes on the home page to what it was a week ago.

Might wait this week and then think about making more ammendments to the site

Hey all, just wanted to give a follow up and mention that i am averaging some good sales per week now. Still looking to make some improvements so if there are some tips thats not been mentioned then feel free :)

The only issue i am having is that i get e.g. 5 sales one day and then 2 on some days and on one day i will get 0. But every week since this thread was created, sales number per week has increased so that is a good sign.

Sounds like things are heading in the right direction for you.

I think most ecommerce sites have particular days of the weeks that are busier than others, for me the majority of the weeks orders will come in between Sunday evening to Tuesday evening then it tends to slow down a bit each day with the quietest day being saturday before starting to pick up again.

If i want a full site review what do i need to do on this forum?

I have a CSS file that i can edit if things need to be changed and i just want to tidy the site up a bit more. I think it looks to busy and a little squashed and wondering if making it more appealing to the eye will do anything for sales

Was just looking at your site, can I ask do you also own stardust-eveningbags.co.uk?

I ask because the site layouts/content are very similar, if you do own both I prefer the layout of the stardust one, seems a bit less busy, text seems easier to read and gives a slightly more professional image and therefore it's more likely that I'd purchase from it.
