Contractual Sick Pay

I work for a company that currently only pays SSP but we're considering offering some form of contractual sick pay.

Reasons are mainly:
  • to discourage employees with covid symptoms from attending site (as a manufacturing company not every job can be worked from home)
  • to attract and retain top employees.
We employ 30 staff and rising. All salaried and well paid.

I'm keen to find out what others would consider a fair and/or typical policy, without encouraging a culture of "sickies" or relying on discretionary judgements.

If you had to write up the perfect contractual sick pay policy, what would you include?

One employer I had used a month per year approach.
First year a full month pay and a full month half pay for sickness.
2nd year 2 months and 2 months.
And so on - up to a max of 6 months and 6 months.

With director discretion to allow more - so if an employee is rushed to hospital and spends 3 months in there you could bypass those limits if you wanted.

Granted 6 weeks fully paid in a rolling year period after 6 months. Which I think is overly generous
First 3 days of a sickness period are unpaid. The 3 day rule may be ignored at the companies discretion for a pre planned operation with evidence.
Sick pay doesn't count towards hrs for Overtime purposes

to be eligible;
THEY must CALL in every day before 9am to HR reporting line and explain their reason to be eligible. If covered by a doctors FIT note they are exempt from this.

3 periods of sickness in 12 months triggers an review.
Many other T&C's
