Is there a way of finding out how many hits competitors sites are getting?

Not accurately, no. You can get some information through http://compete.com but it's not terribly accurate - especially for smaller sites.

The accurate statistics for a website can only be accessed via analytics. Since your competitor would not be willing to give you that, you will have to depend on third part data, which in most cases are skewed. Compete can be be a good source, you could also try Alexa to measure traffic but again the quality of data is questionable. I did write a newsletter on competitive intellegince some time back. It might be of some help to you.

Depends whether its pay per click data - you can get that & how much they spend & their keywords & loads more.

compete.com is nearly as accurate as alexa.com ...personally i use the alexa toolbar for instant stats on every site i visit.

They are the best bet, if you are not ready to cough some money in obtaining the data you want.
