I started a LTD Gas Engineer/Plumbing company last year and have done work for various company's as well as private work since.
I am the sole Director/Employee.
I am trying to get some contract work from another company but they have requested my UTR number before will offer me work. This is first time I have been asked for this so I am a bit confused why other companies have not needed it.
I have given my Company UTR but they say that not working.
I am still getting head round the business side of things and I am looking at sourcing an accountant going forward.

If the work you are doing is within the construction industry then yes you will need to give your UTR as the firm you are contracting to will need to deduct CIS tax, what do they mean the UTR is not working? It must work just may be coming back at the higher rate of 30%
Forgive my ignorance but I have been subbing to British Gas & Corgi doing domestic boiler service/repair work and was never asked for my UTR. Just bank account details etc.

I was just advised by a manager that their payroll person said my Company UTR was not working on their system and I need get it sorted before they can accept me as a contractor.

I have wasted 90 mins trying to get through to HMRC earlier to get some advice.

Thanks for the reply DWS.
I was miss informed by look of it.
I agreed a set price for various jobs but as this company must be CIS registered they will be deducting tax before payment.
That is why they require my UTR?
This just not an additional headache for a LTD company accountant to sort out?

My company UTR was correct as per my HMRC documentation so I suspect the issue at their end.
I have contacted them to ask them to try it again.
Is there a chance they maybe trying set me up as a sole-trader/self employed & that why Company UTR not going through for them?

They could be trying to set you up as a sole trader instead of a Company, depending on what software they use usually you have to tick a box to say which one you are, but even if they are trying to do it as a sole trader the UTR should still work and will just come back as 'unknown' and 30%
Its where they say it is not working that is strange!
