Hello and Welcome,

I have been asked by my employer to produce a presentation to discuss whether Human Resource Management is really "strategic". I must also discuss the relationship between Human Resource Management strategy and organisational strategy.

I am not guru in this field and would appriciate some help as there is not alot of pages on google which discusses this topic.

Regards

In any sizeable business >10 staff, the people are the area where it can be easiest to diffferentiate you from the competition. The chemistry created by the people is the one thing that cannot be replicated by a competitor. HR only really earns its keep when it acts strategically.

Whilst the business should have a strategic development plan, it has constituent parts - marketing, sales, operations, finance, etc. none of these can be executed without the right people, the right culture and attitude etc etc. This is the role of HR. You can't get much more strategic than that.

Recruiting the right people with the right skills, attitude and competence AHEAD of time to support the co's development/growth. To do this well HR must be an integral element of the top table so they know the co strategy, hopefully actually participating in its development, their role is to then ensure both the existing and new staff/organisation can deliver that strategy. They also have a role of dealing with delinquent staff.

The HR role can either be supportive to the existing management team (not recommended) or part of the management team for best performance.

Most managers do have a blind spot when it comes to facing up to dealing with people issues and they fester for too long, A good HR person can nip this sort of thing quickly so the business does not slow down, because of poor performing people.

Hope this helps.
