We are in the process of switching from a partnership to a limited company. I read that it is a requirement to include the company number on our website.

Is it enough to just add the number to the "About us" page or does it need to appear on every page (ie. in the footer). Currently we just display our VAT number on the About Us page.

I also read that the company number should be on all emails, letters and order forms. Is this necessary?

Does anybody care about some number? Surely your ability to serve is what counts....

I think many show this stuff on their websites for bravado purposes. I have letters after my name, pay my bills on time, and could state all this on my website, but my business is brought in by my efforts and not a bunch of letters or numbers.

To be honest I couldn't care less if the number is there or not but if it is a requirement then I would prefer to do things correctly.

eventdomain - You may want to check your own About Us page..... "Managing Director - Chris Given, ACMI, Diploma in Mgt"

As a limited company it is a legal requirement to have your company number and registered office address on your website (and other stationery).

I list my company details on the Contact page of the website but the About Us page would work just as well - so long as it is clearly visible on the website.

Thanks Dawn. Exactly what I wanted to know.

From the Pinsent Mason summary of the UK's ecommerce regulations:

Minimum information to be provided

Service providers, whether involved in e-commerce or not, should provide the following minimum information, which must be easily, directly and permanently accessible:

  • The name of the service provider must be given somewhere easily accessible on the site. This might differ from the trading name and any such difference should be explained – e.g. "XYZ.com is the trading name of XYZ Enterprises Limited."
  • The email address of the service provider must be given. It is not sufficient to include a 'contact us' form without also providing an email address.
  • The geographic address of the service provider must be given. A PO Box is unlikely to suffice as a geographic address; but a registered office address would. If the business is a company, the registered office address must be included in any event.
  • If a company, the company's registration number should also be given.
  • If the business is a member of a trade or professional association, membership details, including any registration number, should be provided.
(More, with links)

It has nothing to do with a company's service levels, sales abilities or the educational achievements, or not, of senior personnel. It's a series of legal requirements based on EU Law.
Non-compliance is very common as will probably be the case with the Cookie law.

I think it does help to have it on the footer of each page. I think its a must to also add this across all printed literature..

Putting it on the footer of every page is a bit over the top. It does need to be on your site and as long as it is easy accessible somewhere, it will be fine on just one page such as the About Us page or the Contact Us page. Mine's on the contact us page along with our company address and complaints procedure, all easy to find.

This. And all of these details in the footer just don't look good i.e they will uglify your UI.
