How do you find out for free if a particular company name already exists please?

Chris it depends what you mean by whether a company name exists...if you mean limited company Alan has provided a link. If you mean does the company name exist anywhere (not necessarily limited company) use Google. If you mean is the name is trademarked search online and if the name comes up with a TM it is trademarked. Don't forget to check with the URL is available in common forms too ie .co.uk, .com, .org etc

True, and if you are not looking just for limited companies, but name use in general also check Charity Commission
