Commodity codes

Hi,

I am currently in the process of importing goods from outside the EU and the commodity code that the supplier has specified on the B/L does not exist on https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/trade-tariff/sections

I can match the first 4 digits but the remainder does not match. Does the commodity code specified on the B/L need to have an exact match on the above specified page? Or just the first 4 digits need to match?

The tariff code is 10 digits, not 4. So yes.

Often the comm codes from places such as China are different to the ones we have here. Might be best to email the tariff classification team and they can advise the most appropriate code - [email protected]

Dutycalculator a great tool to find a commodity code for inexperienced people. I found Trade tariff website is quite difficult to use.

Dutycalculator is not exact. To some extent it 'guesses'. If you use it, you should then work backwards in the Tariff https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/trade-tariff/sections to be sure it is correct.

As suggested above I would advise contacting HMRC's relevant department regarding this as you'll be getting first hand information.
