Comments are disabled, so how are people still leaving comments on my site?

Hi all, hope someone can advise.

I have a wordpress website and comments are turned off. Despite this people (spam bots) are managing to leave spam comments on my site. But how? When I check the spam folder sure enough the comments are there.

Further, the information I have is that the “comments have been left in response to www.mydomain.co.uk/page2” but when I check that page there are no comments that are visible to me. And as mentioned, comments are actually disabled on the website.

This issue is not occurring on any of my other wordpress sites.

Can anybody shed any light here? I did a google search but couldn’t find much about this issue.

Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

I may be wrong but I believe the disable comments just stops the comments box from appearing in the site, spam bots which don't use the form just bypass it and post to the comments code directly. If you also enable some of the other restrictions like "Users must be registered and logged in to comment" it may help. Also make sure you have bulk updated old posts to disable comments as they can override the global comments settings.

    You may have allowed comments to a post at some time.

    Go in to Discussion Settings and tick;
    Users must be registered and logged in to comment and
    Automatically close comments on articles older than ?? days
    (set to 1 day if you're not accepting comments anyway)
