.com V .me V ...

Just wandering what the general thoughts were on domain extensions...

I know its site content, SEO, promotion etc etc etc that make the site work or not, but there's also some measure of people remembering the name extension!

.com still is the big one, then there's regional,
.co has been advertised as the new 'company' but I dont really see much use of this at the moment.

What about .me, or .tv

Problem at the moment is a ton of the good domain names are bought up and never used with .com
Seems to be loads of companies also buy them just to ask silly prices in case one day someone is desperate enough to pay 50k for a £5 domain name.

Any thoughts?
Do you rate .com over any others?
Would you use .me or .tv etc for your business?

I prefer .co.uk for a UK business, and anecdotally at least many searching for a UK service will click a .co.uk over a .com.

Having said that, if you can secure both a .co.uk and .com then that's ideal.

If your site is related to communications, then a .net is also worth getting, and .info and .org are also valued.

I'd ignore the rest. I guess a .tv may appeal if your business is related to that, such as video work.

.me is for personal use, so doesn't apply.

Of course, what you have to factor in is availability of domains, and whether you're targeting search traffic, or users that will enter your domain.

If you're just after search traffic, then the name matters more than than the extension.

Domains are so inexpensive these days that it's worth protecting your brand with the ones that hold value, to prevent confusion, and cover you if people enter your name directly.

I have a site Im looking to launch that offers personal pages to people.
The domain I wanted to use is a .com but as usual is a holding page with an over the top price tag..

I bought the .me version but am still in 2 minds over using it.

On the one hand, it gives me the domain I wanted, and .me is commonly accepted as a personal site / page.. the idea of the site i have is to offer just this, a personal page, but in a collective space with others. i know, facebook, myspace etc... but I have something different here :)

But then, I wander if the .me would also work against this, as it can also be taken as 'small'... of course, if the site were successful, then the .com would increase in value and become even more unobtainable!

Maybe best to keep searching for a name that is available in all extensions???

Well if you mean something like angelfire, or blogspot, or along those lines, then a .me is fine if you're targeting consumers.

e.g. bobssite.weblord.me

If you're targeting this for business though, and not personal use, then I'd still stay clear of the .me

And either way, personally I'm not sure about weblord as a name, although I see why you chose it.

You're also hosted in the US, which if you're targeting the UK is a bad idea to be honest.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

I do rate .com domain names over other domain extensions.

Our advice is to register as many domain extensions as your budget allows. This way you protect your online brand from deliberate, or unintentional cyber-squatters.

.me domain names tend to be for personal use. For example, personal blogs or personal email.

.tv is generally used by television/media businesses.

I have recently bought

leahg.me

I bought it because it is 'me' hence perfect.

I love it, I can remember it, so I should imagine can anyone else should it appear on a businesscard etc. It is not the domain I use for Google links (that is a .com) as I already had one in place re that...but in terms of a nice neat domain for promotion sites and materials it is ideal.

Other domains I have are .com and then I may buy the co.uk version too simply to avoid others taking it.

Thanks, although weblord is not the domain Im referring to in this thread.

I was looking at another domain, in order to host personal pages but open to everyone.
I understand the general thoughts are .com all the way on something like this, but at the same time, .me I think can maybe bring the personal edge to the site, even though it is a wider company offering personal pages..!?

Certainly until the 2000 new gTLDs start appearing next year, .uk and .com are the clear "winners" - with a few of the ccTLDs being "cute" and therefore memorable for *some* uses
.tv if media related
.fm for radio stations
.me for personal use
etc

Basically ask yourself the question - would you "trust" it ...
