.com, .co.uk or both?

Afternoon UKBFers!

I'm in the process of having my website redesigned for the new year

I have the .com and .co.uk domains for my website, and wondered, in your opinion, does it make a difference which domain I use primarily for my website? For example would using .co.uk bring me more UK traffic?

I currently use the .com as the main domain, (and all my business emails are using the .com, which I would leave as is) but I'm not sure if since I'm a UK business it might be better to use .co.uk? Or does it not really matter?

Also, if I did choose to stick with the .com, how would I go about point the .co.uk to the main site, (or vice versa)?

If my business was UK-based, I would have the .co.uk one as the main one and have the .com re-directed to it.

Likewise, I would use the co.uk as you're UK based, but have .com (and potentially the other TLD's) redirect to the co.uk as well.

Depending on your business, its not a bad idea to buy up the other popular TLDs as well.

You should ideally use a [301] redirect to prevent possible duplicate content issues with the search engines.

I would go with .co.uk, not sure why but when I do a Google search I tend to click on the .co.uk's before the .coms

Personally I think it depends on what the domain name is first. For example my name is also my domain name, but I have it as both .com and .co.uk which is more protective. I think the bottom line is that if you can afford to have both, then better to err on the safer side.

Consider this, if just one customer comes to you via the .com, will this pay for the cost of the domain name, and more importantly, would you be in any way concerned if a competitor bought the .com version.

So if feasible, stick with both.

As mentioned before I already have both domains, I was just questioning which one to have my main site on, and which one for the redirect...but judging from everyone else's response, looks like I'll be mainstreaming with the .co.uk, and having the .com point to the .co.uk
