Coloured Envelopes (retailers view)

Hi,

I'm looking for some feedback from retailers if possible. We currently send out a small brochure and compliments slip with an intro to who we are/what we do to selected/targeted prospects who we'd like to work with.

In your opinion would the colour of an envelope make you more/less inclined to open it? If so would a particular colour appeal to you? We currently use black envelopes (so that they stand out from white/brown ones) but someone suggested yesterday that in standing out they may look like marketing/junk and be binned.

Also, would a printed or hand written label make a difference to you?

Any feedback would be great.

Thank you

Ps I did find this http://www.allcolourenvelopes.co.uk/about.asp guide on Google but it's a company who sell them so thought may be biased, plus it's only retailers we are targeting so a retailers viewpoint would be great. Thanks again

White envelope, hand written will get opened every time

the bigger question I'd be asking myself is do I have time to do that?

Also make sure you know who you are writing to, "The Manager" or "Business Owner" generally goes straight in the recycle bin.

Letters that look personal are more likely to be read.

Those brown envelopes with "HMRC" on them always get my attention.

I don't think I've ever had junk mail in nice coloured envelopes before though. A lime green letter would probably grab my attention. Black would too though. Maybe it's a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?

Don't they just. I think it's the excitement - will it be refund, or a demand, or what I have forgotten this time!

It's probably the only thing that makes my heart skip a beat (not in an Olly Murs kind of way). It gives me that feeling you got at school where you knew you were in big trouble.

Then you open it and find its usually just some bull**** that doesn't make any sense. Kind of how they think I'm actually 2 different people with the exact same name and address. One of us is an employee and one is the employer lol. "Dear Tom Makinson, this is the tax code for Tom Makinson so you can work out his tax" and the next letter say's "Dear Tom Makinson, this is your tax code so your employer, Tom Makinson, can work out your tax". *facepalm*

To stay in topic, I'd be interested to know which colour stands out the most to people, statistically that is.

We sent out advertising cards in red envelopes with hand written addresses and "private and confidential" just before Valentines Day one year - worked a treat as they went straight to the target. We even got a few people ringing us up to say they actually enjoyed the laugh as the envelopes caused gossip amongst the staff.

Just a comment on the paper stock you use - I might be odd here - I'm much more inclined to open a matt envelope than I am a glossy one.

Don't print crap on the front either, Ultralase and Virgin send me so much spam but they print stuff on the front so I identify and bin, if I didn't know it was them I'd open it and they would have my attention for a few seconds.

They are matt black.

We currently hand write the labels but the handwriting is atrocious so i'm considering printing the labels instead (the hand written ones don't look very professional). I guess its a top up of have more professional looking printed or less professional looking hand written. Getting someone else (with better hand writing) to do them isn't an option unfortunately.

Can't you get font's that look hand written? You must be able to get a program that can make what you type look hand written by making each letter slightly different even if it's the same letter etc. I have received letters like this before and they are very convincing until you look a bit closer!

Yeh that's exactly what are doing, if you do them in a blue font they do look pretty good. You can still tell when you get close obviously.
