Cold calling is a good option but different marketing techniques often do help eachother. For example, when you send an email to a company, you can wait a few days, and if there isn't an answer it gives you a good starting point with mentioning you sent an email, better still if they reply potitively to the email.
Then if you just randomly show up, which I personally would never do as I wouldn't like that doing to me but you could start with mentioning that you sent an email but you thouht it would be best showing the product/service in person.
I have walked into local shops and other business premises to sell my web design services and it's well worth it. You have to think about the law of averages, some people will instantly dismiss you but you could find yourself coming away with a few extra clients. Thats how I built the foundation of my freelance business
