Cold callers now say "I shall make a note of that"

I have noticed in the last few months, cold callers say "I shall make a note of that" when I give them any little bit of information while telling them that I do not want their service. Or they say "I will delete you from my data base".

As far as I am concerned they can put what they want in their data base or take as many notes as they want. It is what they do with the information in their files or data bases that is important. So why do they say these things?

Just thinking it could be something to do with data protection. Is this correct?

I had one the other day and when I asked where they got my number, he replied that they had received it from a data collection warehouse. When pressed for further details I was told "I can't give you that information over the phone but if you write to us..."
Sounded like a tactic to avoid people actually going to the effort of finding out where they bought their data.

Do you know what I dont really care what they do with my data
Im fed up with hearing about it really. The place is full of people on edge frightened of this or worried about that
We have bred a generation of cold timid souls who are frightened of their own shadow
How the hell are we going to fight the Russians !

They put your name and address on a momory stick!
They dont come around you house and if they did you could just box their ears!

People are able to gather information about anyone based on anything they put on the web. Information are stored up in the cloud until someone searches for it. It could be many years back - information that you've inputted somewhere when you registered to a certain website or social media, etc. They will never tell you where they got your information because once you know, you won't ever try to put any information about yourself on the web. That is why I'm quite careful now with websites that are trying to get some personal information from me.

Data mining relies on the on going fact a small % of web users throw thier personall information about like it was going out of fashoin ... their high visibility makes us all the more visible

Twitter is all about taping into the desire of tweeters to tweet, it is primarily about gathering data, that's it's business model, advertising revenues are another $ stream

This visible data is used to cross link less visible information and mine a complete picture about a person, thier family business, interests, hobbies, buying habits, health and employment status etc etc AND that of their entire social network...just like building a jigsaw from the corner peices, and the more readily identifiable peices.

Ultimately INFORMATION IS POWER (data mining is big business because of this)

power that can be used for good or evil

The latest legislation is aimed at preventing abuse of that power

It is not weakness when we want business information which we expect to be confidential to remain confidential.

We live in a generation where just because someone rings you up and askes you about what telephone company you are with and what are you presently paying, you tell them all they want to know. Or when your insurance is about to be renewed. Why shouldn't you keep supplier information confidential?

Is it weakness to say no thanks and not comply with every organisation's or business's wish to know about our business just because they ask.

I do a lot of cold calling, data can be brought from anywhere in bulk, insurance companies, data handling companies, lead generators. If you don't like receiving cold calls you can register for TPS. Many companies will then comply and not call you, unfortunately some do. If someone says they don't know where they got your data they are probably telling the truth unless the caller is a one man band, general staff aren't going to know where data was bought, they usually just work off a database with the information readily available.

No the "you" referred to by the caller is the company and not the person making the call. The call caller is representing their company when making a call and not themselves. They would in fact be telling an untruth. The truth is either " it is not company policy for their staff to know this information" or "that information is confidential".

PS. I have no problem with cold callers refusing to say where their data came from.

For the most part, I don't care either what happens with my data. However I do care what happens with my time, so when people phone me unsolicited for something that I don't have any interest in (if I was interested then it would be solicited) this is time wasted, and that is quite annoying.

Not sure how you can say that. We definitely get fewer calls now we're part of TPS, and more often than not pointing out that we're on TPS sends the caller away. Much of this is due to ignorance - the caller doesn't realise they're not allowed to cold call people.

You'll always get some, and of course TPS doesn't stop people calling from overseas, but it's certainly not worthless.
