Can anybody help? I run a niche business making customised products for horses, horse riders and dogs. I've been trying to branch out for ages to start making products for other small businesses (horsey and non-horsey). I work with a pattern designer and have just taken on a machinist with 30 years' experience making clothes. I've got 12 industrial sewing machines.
I have a potential customer who needs to quickly move forward with sampling some children's clothing and has asked me to help. I don't know how to charge for sampling and don't have time with this customer to put the request out to my competitors to see what their charges are. Can anybody with experience in this area help? Is it an hourly cost (my machinist's hourly rate plus a percentage to include my time and running costs, I guess) or a flat fee? Or some other calculation?
I was thinking I could possibly take a percentage of the sampling cost off a subsequent order over a certain amount (I guess £1000-ish minimum or 100 units perhaps). This is all new and I'd be most grateful for advice.
