Oh... I was under the impression that until CT600 was filled out and returned that the company was not registered at HMRC as being active.

Well you are totally under the wrong impression then:)

All limited companies setup are automatically notified to HMRC who issue a form CT41G.

If this is not returned then they automatically issue a notice to file a CT return which if you do not file or notify them that you are a) dormant or b) striking off the company they will automatically issue non filing penalties.

Why does HMRC form CT41G state that you only need to fill it out once you have begun trading then? If they automatically file a CT return form anyway?

Probably because they expect that within the 12 months following the formation of the company, that you will have come within the charge to CT and work on the assumption that you just did not tell them. (There are many other instances of areas that HMRC make these type of assumptions and often not in a consistant manner eg many companies will automatically be set up under PAYE whether they wish to be or not......an example is that I set up 2 companies, one for a husband and one for a wife at the same time and the same address(and tax office). Neither one requires a PAYE scheme setting up however HMRC have set one up for the husbands company but not the wifes!!!)

Never expect HMRC to do anything logically:D
