Claiming back SMP from HMRC

Hello

I cannot set aside HMRC payments against the balaced owed to me by HMRC for statutory maternit pay (SMP).

I would like to claim it back. Does anyone know how long it takes to do so?

Also what information do I need to include in the letter. The information on HMRC website is very sparse.

Just apply for the advance payment and you will receive it before you start paying SMP

I did consider applying for an advance but the form was so long winded and just dropped it because I couldn't work out whether to apply for the full 9 month period. or for the current tax year only.

It seems a bit more straightforward to do it in hindsight.

When you applied in advance, do you know how long it took them to pay you?

I help my clients claim SMP and I then deal with the payroll, but looking back at the last clients claim they received the payment a month before SMP started.
