Hello Everybody,

A colleague of mine just called me...

He cant get past the password on a brand new Cisco 881 k9.

Using :

Cisco
Cisco

Doesnt work, and he cant break in? Maybe the password reset option has been disabled?

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

yeah I saw that too...

I am trying to collect possibilities before I call back...

I've never heard of a reset button on the back of a unit before? Also, this is brand new so there should be no configuration on there... so i'm not sure about this answer.

Thanks anyway i'll ask about the reset button when i call him...

Anyone else?

The default username is cisco / cisco not uppercase.

If you dont have this you need to password recover the device which you will need a console cable for.

Instructions can be found on the cisco site if this is the case, if it is new router try a reboot in case the user changed the password by mistake. On reboot it should clear unless he has saved to flash.

I wasn't actually there so i'm not sure of the details and i've never seen a "new" unit before...

I suspect some kind of human error...

They seemed to think it should have a default of cisco cisco?

Is a new unit completely blank?

    I think they returned it...

    It depends,
SOME! cheaper dsl, switches, access points can come with a default cisco cisco .
Normally a cisco device will come blank and just boot into IOS ready for configuration.

if cisco cisco didnt work then the chances are its borked or someone already changed it.

Just in case anyone is interested...

It turns out they had the wrong break sequence for the terminal they were using...

Tera Terminal uses "alt b" not "ctrl break"

They had a new box with a one time password (cisco cisco) came out then couldnt get back in, tried "ctrl break" and thought that the break sequence wasn't working...

Just goes to show, 9 times out of 10 it's the simplest things...

The information in this document is based on these software versions:

    • Cisco CallManager 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2
    • Use the AdminUtility to change the password for Cisco CallManager 3.3 and later.
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
