Just a little help from the experts here if you don't mind.

One of my friends has been approached by this company

saying they will get us to the top of google (organic) so we can dispense with the keywords or reduce them. They email claims to put in custom database and they will be near the top which they are. I am always sceptical about these companies but he is interested.

Your opinions are appreciated.

I'm also always really skeptical when approached by SEO / web development companies but they do appear to be top of Google for their targeted keywords.

It's probably worth investigating further as to exactly how their database works and try speaking to previous clients if possible.

Some thoughts

For what queries are they claiming to be able to top Google? Dispensing of or reducing keywords doesn't make sense, if they are offering seo services then keyword research will be an integral part of the service. Ask for other results achieved as 'custom database' is not a competitive nor high traffic keyword phrase.

Like your man said, anyone approaching you to do SEO work, doesn't have enough already. Try to find out who they have worked with before and do a bit of homework on them.

How many almost identical sites have they approached making exactly the same promise? If more than one says 'yes' how are they going to decide which of you they were lying to?

Look into their portfolio, communicate with them judge their quality of communications and analyze how they intent to address your requirements.

Alternatively, communicate with other service providers and compare the quality of the proposals and then make a decision.

Now all depends upon how you take things.

They've contacted me aswell. I'm very sceptical. They've promised to get me on page 1 for the phrase business mobile phone contract and business mobile phone. They keep ringing and I don't know whether to believe them.
