Check your own rankings tool

Hi Guys,

I have used a ranking tool to check my own rankings ( Rank Tracker ) but found it was largely inaccurate - shame really as I liked the layout - you entered your URL and all the keywords and it would auto search for you and give you the results.

Does anyone know of a reliable tool I can use?

    Rank Checker http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/rank-checker/ Firefox add-in
does a good job, make sure you set up the options so it is using google.co.uk not .com and only polls every 10 seconds instead of 2 (as google ends to lock you out)

First things first, there's hardly such a thing as "accurate rankings" these days. Google does a lot to make search results suit individual users' best interests, so what you see in your browser might be several positions different from what you see in a rank checker or from what your users see in their browsers.

Here are the major factors that influence the difference in ranks:

    - search history
    - users' custom settings
    - language
    - location

Although I think traffic and conversions should be higher on the priority list of metrics to track, I still check my rankings. The desktop software I find most reliable is rank tracker, online - webmeup.

The problem with using automated rank checker tools is that google now ranks pages based on users previous history.

What appears on #1 for you may be #6000 for someone else.

    GWT is a good start.

The results provided by third-party rank checkers and GWT are pretty much the same, at least for the sites I've tracked.

Also GWT have lots of limitations:

    1) You can't set keywords to track. You just get average position on search queries that bring users to your site. How about keywords you target? You won't be able tracking your progress on those.

    2) Delay in reporting. You won't be able checking fresh ranking data with GWT. Today is February 28 and GWT lets you check February 1 only.

    3) It doesn't keep more than 3 months of ranking history.

So if you want tracking keyword ranking closely, you can't rely on GWT solely, although it's useful comparing the results from time to time.
