I am sure that the franking machine is the cheapest way to send a 2nd class large letter under 100g however I am finding UK sellers on eBay that are selling items that are large letter size for under £1. When you consider paypal, eBay and postage fee's these items are being sold at a loss.

Is there a cheaper way? At the moment it costs 57p (I think), does anyone know a cheaper option?

As the other posters say, it's more likely that they're not actually making any money than they have a cheaper postage method. Or they're hoping you'll buy more than one item so they make a profit.

I always see those power sellers selling big items for 0.99 + free delivery. How they're sourcing so cheap to be able to include postage and also making profit i don't know.

But personally I'd prefer selling a low number of high profit items than thousands of low profit ones

They may well be selling a number of heavier items and these lighter large letters are reducing the average weight of their post, thus lowering the price for all their other items.

If this was the case, they could justify selling at a loss.

They would need to use packet post for this.

The Packet post price (with the penny fuel surcharge) is actually 58p + VAT before any quantity discounts.
