Hi all,

I am attempting to set up a charity based in the UK. The charity will mainly focus on assisting the underpriveleged youth in Scotland to begin with, however more broadly it is a per community based project.

Has anyone set up a charity? Could anyone please assist in the process of this?

I have set up 4 charities - from local to national, to international.
Over time the way the Charity Commission works has changed to the point now where they try and push you down their model constitutions / documents rather than any other route. They do this as they know that those models will stand up to the needs of a charity / the law / volunteers / etc.

You need to consider - will one of those models suit your needs - if so, adopt that and it is relatively easy... if not, then I would recomend that you a) find another charity and look at their constitution / model and b) take advice. Charities, if above a few people / certain size / using a number of volunteers can become a real pain - when you employ people in a business if they are out of order you can reprimand them / fire them, in a charity it is not so easy! I have experienced charities where volunteers have run amok and caused a lot of issues - it is really worth while ensuring that you have a framework to deal with it before it happens.

If you will have any business elements to it, talk to the charity commission about their new approach to that - in fact talk to them anyway, they are very helpful.

If you have any doubts - take legal advice, it will be worth it.

it is normal to have a reason before starting a charity - very unusual to start one not knowing what you want it to do...

go and find the reason first - then if there is a need, set up a charity...

how can we give you ideas if we do not know what is close to your heart - and running a charity - you need to be passionate about the cause

Excuse me , but no disrespect i do have a plan and i know exactly what cause i want as. I am a social worker , i was just lo looking for a wider ideas from other individuals about what they think will be. A good framework for a charity , i want to stop child and women exploitation and have a keen interest in human rights is that a good enough response for you

You can always get in touch with the Institute of Fundraising in Scotland. They will be able to tell you about the Scottish prospective to having a charity there and all the "good" practice required these days , when having the responsibilities of looking after your charity.

Charity laws are slightly different in Scotland than the rest of the UK in some respects and also Iof F Scotland will help you with training, audit and introduce you to other charities in Scotland too.

Best of luck with your charity.

    Best wishes

Johanna, Good luck with your charity too. I would like to suggest that you get in touch with the London Institute of Fundrasing which will help you with all your questions for setting up a chairty for vunerable children and women. There are some good role model charities out there. Dont be afraid to contact them too for help and mentorship.

    Best of luck,

    Avril. :)
