How long time does it take to change the company name?
Is it just to file a form with companies house and later tell HMRC?

You can do it online same day with companies house webfiling £30 or standard service £8 takes about 3 days.

Then you need a checklist of things to change /notify once it is done, e.g.
- Your accountant
- HMRC for PAYE & Corporation Tax
- HMRC for VAT (they are not joined up)
- Bank accounts
- Website
- Insurance Company
- Information Commissioner if Data Protection (unless exempt of course)
- Business Cards
- Letterheads, or other printed matter
- Directories you are in e.g. Googl+Local, Yell, Yelp, Thompson etc
- Landlord
- Utility companies
- Business Rates
- Business signs
- Your customers
- Your suppliers
