Hi guys,

I run a LTD company (only just set up) through my accountant, and registered for VAT at the same time.

On saturday, I got a letter from HMRC with a 'certificate of registration for Value Added Tax'.

It has a 'registration number', it also says:
EFFECTIVE DATE: 1st FEB 2012 - what does this mean?
CERTIFICATE ISSUED ON - 19th DEC 2011.

Now, the VAT registration was supposed to backdate to 1st December, and this is when i will be paying VAT from.

However, when i put my VAT number into our online sales channels such as eBay/Amazon, it is getting declined? Also, i have checked it at:

http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/

And it says it is invalid?

Any help would be appreciated.

That does sound weird to me; you sure you haven't got them mixed up. I just got mine recently and I think it had effective date or something like that and that was prior to the issued date. So we could claim VAT back from the date we applied for VAT.

I understand that you can reclaim VAT on purchases made upto 6 months prior to registration

It's up to four years for goods, but only if you still have them at the date of registration. Stock or equipment on hand, basically.

It's six months for services, but again only if the service hasn't been fully "used up" in making previous supplies
