I had this same problem, soon it wont recognise the disc's.

Is it old? Or have you hammered it alot?

If so its probably on its last legs

Go on to ebuyer .com and look at the slimline drives CD/DVD +-, there some one there for about £30 - £40.

Dead cheap will last you a while and you can burn DVDs ;)

it may not be that expensive to get a replacement , is the drive modular , can it be removed if so what is the part number of the device. I fixed a friends laptop he had spilt beer into the tray and I got him a new one and fitted it , worked fine.

are their any software issues

Its a vaio which is used plenty but the cd writer hardly ever.

If I cannot fix it easily I will probably make do without.

Lovely machine and only 2 or maybe 3 years old but the wireless switch is gone - the network conection - and now the DVD writer it seems is also kaput.

ok time to get a new laptop :) good deals everywhere at the moment , I would like one of those smal ones so i could use it at starbucks and places with free access

A brand new Viao? Are you mad? I wouldnt bother, everyone knows they are the best laptops around hence the huge price tag. But if you have the money go for it...

I take it cause its over 3 years old it has no warranty. Your best bet would to be take it into a professional, let them replace all the parts etc and maybe even upgrade them.

Its hard to diagnose as we don't really have any info to work on... What was the error message?

If you have a write error -

What's the maximum speed your DISKS will write at? And... What speed is your CD Burner set to write at?

Sometimes using the auto options the software will attempt to write too fast to disk, and as such it will fail. Setting the speed manually can sometimes help.

If you're running out of buffer, then I'd stop using any other applications when burning or increase the system resources.

I'd check these first...
